THE SPIRIT OF LEVIATHAN: A CALL TO INTERCESSORS

A Teaching by Prophet Moses Branson James

While I was praying and meditating, God gave me an understanding concerning the spiritual challenges affecting Mashonaland Central. I believe there are many spiritual forces that intercessors need to pray about, but I was led to focus on seven major spiritual influences.

Today, we are going to discuss one of them: the spirit of Leviathan.

1. Understanding the Spirit of Leviathan Leviathan is mentioned in the Book of Job 41. In this chapter, the Bible describes Leviathan as a powerful and fearsome creature that no human being can easily control. Job 41:34 says: "He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride." This scripture connects Leviathan with pride. As intercessors, we must understand the danger of pride in the house of God. When people begin to exalt their own names above the name of God, the glory that belongs to Him is no longer given the honour it deserves. In Bindura and throughout Mashonaland Central, we must examine ourselves and ask whether we are truly lifting up the name of Jesus or building our own names and reputations. The greatest danger in ministry is when the servant becomes more important than the One he or she is serving. The church belongs to Jesus Christ. Our ministries, gifts, titles, and positions must never become greater than His name.

2. Leviathan and the Danger of Pride As intercessors, we must guard our hearts against pride, competition, jealousy, and the desire to be recognised by people. Pride can destroy relationships, divide ministries, and create an environment where people compete for positions instead of working together for the advancement of God's Kingdom. When pride enters the heart, humility begins to disappear. People may become more concerned about their recognition than the salvation of souls. Let us remember that we were not called to compete with one another. We were called to serve God and to serve His people. Where pride is allowed to grow, unity begins to die. But where humility is cultivated, the presence of God is honoured.

3. Leviathan and Twisted Communication The Hebrew word commonly associated with Leviathan carries the idea of twisting, coiling, or writhing. In spiritual teaching, this imagery can remind us of the dangers of distorted communication, misunderstanding, and division. As intercessors, we must pray for clarity, wisdom, truth, and unity within the church. When communication becomes distorted, people begin to misunderstand one another. Words are taken out of context, rumours spread, and relationships that should be built on love become damaged. Sometimes, a misunderstanding that could have been resolved through a simple conversation develops into a major conflict. This is why we must be careful with our words. Not every disagreement is a spiritual attack, but every disagreement must be handled with wisdom, humility, truth, and love. We must refuse to become agents of confusion. Instead, let us become instruments of peace, reconciliation, and restoration.

4. The Importance of Unity in Marriage and the Church Misunderstanding can damage marriages, divide families, and weaken relationships within the church. When communication breaks down and pride takes control, people may make decisions that bring lasting pain. As intercessors, we must pray for marriages, families, church leaders, and the body of Christ. We must pray that husbands and wives will learn to communicate with love, forgive one another, and seek godly counsel when challenges arise. We must also pray for unity among church leaders, because division among leaders can affect the people they are called to serve. However, we must not automatically attribute every divorce, disagreement, or family problem to a spiritual force. We should also address practical issues such as communication, accountability, counselling, and personal responsibility. Our responsibility is to stand in prayer while encouraging people to pursue peace and reconciliation wherever possible.

5. How Do We Stand Against the Spirit of Leviathan? We do not overcome pride through pride, nor do we overcome confusion by creating more confusion. Our weapons are prayer, the Word of God, humility, truth, love, and obedience to the Holy Spirit. As intercessors, we must learn to remain in the presence of God. We must develop a life of prayer that goes beyond public gatherings and church programmes. We need people who will pray when nobody is watching, serve when nobody is applauding, and remain faithful even when nobody recognises their contribution. The presence of God must be more important to us than the applause of people. If we desire to see transformation in our churches and communities, we must begin with our own hearts. Let us put away pride, gossip, jealousy, competition, and every attitude that destroys unity. We must become people who speak the truth in love, protect one another through prayer, and refuse to spread information that we have not verified.

6. The Fear of the Lord and the Spirit of Wisdom The Bible says in Proverbs 9:10: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." When the fear of the Lord is absent, people can become careless with their words, their conduct, and their responsibilities in the house of God. We must restore reverence for God in our churches. The pulpit is not a platform for personal ambition. It is a place of responsibility, where God's Word must be handled with reverence, truth, and integrity. Those who minister must remember that they are accountable to God for how they represent His Word. We must stop using our mouths to destroy the people we should be praying for. Instead of gossiping about one another, let us intercede for one another. Instead of spreading rumours, let us seek the truth. Instead of competing for recognition, let us work together to win souls for Christ. A church that gossips more than it prays will struggle to maintain the unity required for effective ministry.

7. A Call to Those Who Carry a Prophetic Grace As we discuss Leviathan, we must also examine the responsibility of those who serve in prophetic ministry. The prophetic gift is not a licence to seek attention, dominate others, or make ourselves the centre of every conversation. A genuine prophetic ministry must point people towards Jesus Christ, uphold the truth of Scripture, and encourage believers to grow in their relationship with God. We must be careful not to allow personal ambition to silence correction or distort the message we are called to deliver. If we want to hear God's voice clearly, we must cultivate humility, prayer, obedience, and a willingness to be corrected. The purpose of the prophetic is not to make our voices famous; it is to make the name of Jesus known.

CONCLUSION: LET US RETURN TO PRAYER

My message to every intercessor in Mashonaland Central, especially those serving in Bindura, is this: let us return to prayer, humility, unity, and the fear of the Lord. Let us examine our hearts before we point fingers at others. Let us refuse to allow pride to destroy our relationships, gossip to divide our churches, or misunderstanding to weaken our marriages and families. We must become a generation that builds rather than destroys, restores rather than condemns, and prays rather than gossips. Remember, our ultimate battle is not against flesh and blood. Our responsibility is to stand firm in faith, remain grounded in God's Word, and depend on the power of the Holy Spirit. When pride rises, choose humility. When confusion comes, pursue truth. When division threatens, become a peacemaker. And when the church faces challenges, let us fall on our knees and pray. May God raise a generation of humble intercessors who will stand in the gap for their families, their churches, their communities, and the nation of Zimbabwe.
